You can create the illusion of an animated object using the material file (i once created the illusion of a rotating 3D coin using multiple frames while placing the same mesh multiple times at different angles, each invividual mesh becoming visible at certain times.), but you have to edit the source if you want the actual mesh to be animated.

Spoiler:

Of course, the more frames you add, the smoother.

this used 5 frames.
What i put for the .material:

*note: this specific material has the metallic effect applied. What makes the illusion work is the fact that each frame is played at a different time.

in the .world:

Of course, you can do more than rotating animations, but this was just a simple example.

That same method can be used to animate tree leaves!
I haven't tried it yet, but I know I've seen it before somewhere (?)

All you have to do is use a leaf texture and make multiple frames of the leaf moving slightly, in a swaying motion.

I wouldn't suggest it for huge forests because it might be laggy.

EDIT: Nvm with the same method stuff. The method Steve used was a little different than what I was thinking

You mean the sway animation? just add this under where you write the image:

Code:
            texture grassPatch.png
            wave_xform scroll_x sine 1 .08 0 .08
